CPII DATA LAB · WHO OWNS PHILIPPINE POWER
CPII Data Lab
Historical ownership mapping of the electricity value chain

A handful of groups dominate the power chain.

This historical explorer aggregates plants and utilities to the controlling groups coded in the supplied workbook. Five source-coded groups account for roughly seven in ten megawatts of installed capacity. A single distribution company delivers more than half the electricity sold in the source series.

01 / GENERATION

Who makes the megawatts

Every generating plant, aggregated to the source-coded group attributed control in the supplied workbook. Coal-heavy and Luzon-heavy, the fleet is dominated by San Miguel, Aboitiz and Lopez — with the government’s residual assets (PSALM) still a top-five holder.

02 / DISTRIBUTION

Who delivers it — and to whom

Distribution tells two stories at once. By energy sold, one utility — MERALCO — moves more than half the country’s electricity. By customer connections, electric cooperatives serve the most households. Toggle to see the split.

03 / RETAIL SUPPLY

Who sells to the open market

Retail electricity suppliers compete for large “contestable” customers. The licences cluster around the very same names — Aboitiz and the MERALCO group each field six suppliers, Ayala four.

04 / VALUE CHAIN

The same names, end to end

The real story isn’t any single segment — it’s how the same groups appear across all three. Each row is a source-coded controlling group; the bars show its footprint in generation, distribution and retail side by side. Groups filling every column are vertically integrated across the chain.

05 / THE DATA

Explore every plant

All generating plants in the dataset. Search by plant, owner, parent company or source-coded group; filter by fuel or grid; click a column to sort.

Download the supplied ownership records. Plant records preserve the source-coded operator, parent company, controlling group, grid and contract field; summary records reproduce the displayed rankings.

Interpretation guardrail. The table reproduces the source workbook's historical labels. Corporate structures, operating arrangements and beneficial ownership may have changed; use this as a research explorer, not a current legal register.
